Dr. Ashley George Hamilton-Taylor is founder of the Web, Animation, Visualisation and E-Learning (WAVE) Research Laboratory, Department of Computing, University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica. He has been deeply involved in the development of computing curricula at UWI and other tertiary institutions for over twenty years. His research and design interests include Educational Technology, Multimedia, Animation, Computer Science Education, Software/Information Visualization, User-centered Software Design, Human-Computer Interaction, and the role of internet-based media in Social Development.
His wider interests include Sustainable Development, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in developing countries, Cultural Computing, African Diaspora development issues, Environmental/Green Technologies, and the role of ICT is these areas.
Dr. Hamilton-Taylor is a graduate of the UWI, with a B.Sc. in Computer Science. He holds a Masters degree in Computer Science with a minor in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he was a LASPAU-Fulbright scholar, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Georgia, where he developed the SKA algorithm animation system.
Dr. Hamilton-Taylor was consultant-evaluator on the first comprehensive study of educational technology conducted in Jamaica, the UNDP/Government of Jamaica Computer-Assisted Instruction in Secondary Schools Pilot Project.
As Senior Research Scientist with Isadra International of Palo Alto, California, he helped to establish the first freezone software development enterprise in Jamaica. He was Computer Specialist at the Planning Institute of Jamaica with the UNDP BACHUE-Jamaica project, the goal of which was to develop a simulation of the Jamaican economy and the socio-demographic effects of government policies.
The Web, Animation, Visualisation and E-learning (WAVE) research group, spearheaded by Dr. Hamilton-Taylor, is actively encouraging the positive use of local culture in the design of e-learning, animation, and games for social upliftment. The WAVE Research Laboratory, funded by a New Initiative Grant from the UWI, aims to facilitate research and advanced education on the frontiers of computing in interactive visual computing, mobile computing and new media technology.
